Located in Kent, approximately 60 miles from central London via the M2/A2, Canterbury takes around 1 hour 20 minutes to reach and makes a very satisfying half-day or full-day visit.
Canterbury Cathedral (CT1 2EH) is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England, founded by St Augustine in 597 AD. The Quire, Trinity Chapel (containing the shrine of Thomas Becket, murdered in 1170), the Black Prince's tomb, and the Norman crypt are the highlights. The medieval stained glass is among the finest in Europe. Allow 2–2.5 hours for a thorough visit.
Canterbury's city centre is largely pedestrianised and preserves significant sections of its Roman and medieval walls. The Westgate Towers (England's largest surviving medieval gateway), the Roman Museum, the Beaney House museum, and the medieval weavers' houses on the River Stour are all within an easy walk of the Cathedral.
Leeds Castle (ME17 1PL) — described as "the most beautiful castle in the world" — is 15 miles west of Canterbury on the M20. A morning at Leeds Castle followed by an afternoon in Canterbury is an excellent full-day Kent itinerary. Both are easily combined in a single day from London.
