The Cheltenham Festival is National Hunt racing's greatest meeting, held over four days in mid-March at Cheltenham Racecourse (Prestbury Park), GL50 4SH. The festival attracts approximately 250,000 spectators over its four days and includes some of the most prestigious jump racing events in the world — the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Stayers' Hurdle, and the pinnacle of National Hunt racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Cheltenham is approximately 95 miles from central London via the M40/A40 — a 90–110 minute drive in normal conditions. The M40 route via Oxford is generally the fastest from London. On peak Cheltenham Festival days (Gold Cup Friday), the Cheltenham road network becomes congested from approximately 9am — we recommend departing London by 8am to arrive for the first race at 1:30pm.
Unlike Royal Ascot, Cheltenham's dress code is smart casual to smart — there is no requirement for formal morning suits, though many guests in the Best Dressed enclosures dress formally. The festival has a distinctly Irish character (the Irish racing community travels in force), and the atmosphere is electric throughout all four days. Gold Cup day is the most prestigious — book your transfer well in advance as this is the most in-demand day.
