Henley Royal Regatta is held for five days in the first week of July at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire RG9 2LY — approximately 36 miles from central London. The world's most prestigious rowing regatta attracts elite crews from over 30 countries, and its social enclosures — the Stewards' Enclosure, the Regatta Enclosure, and the Leander Club — are fixtures in the British summer social season alongside Wimbledon and Ascot.
The Stewards' Enclosure (invitation only, strict dress code) and the Regatta Enclosure (ticket required, smart dress) have separate entrance gates along the towpath. Private vehicles and taxis drop at the designated drop-off points on Remenham Lane (east bank approach) or Henley town centre (west bank). The towpath itself is pedestrianised during the Regatta — your driver will drop as close as permitted to your specific enclosure.
Central London to Henley takes 55–75 minutes via the M4/A404 or the M40/A4130. Both routes are approximately the same distance; the M4 route via Maidenhead is marginally faster. On Regatta days, local roads become congested from midday onwards — plan to arrive by 11:30am if attending morning races. Racing begins at 8am on some days.
The Stewards' Enclosure requires morning dress (lounge suit or above) for men and smart dress for women (no trouser suits). The Regatta Enclosure requires smart attire. Arriving in a private car allows you to travel in your formal attire comfortably — no squeezing into a train with a top hat.
