The Peak District in Derbyshire and Staffordshire was England's first National Park (designated 1951) and remains one of its most visited — a dramatic landscape of limestone dales, gritstone moors, ancient stone villages, and some of England's finest country houses. It is approximately 160 miles from central London — 2.5 hours via the M1/A6 — making it an ambitious day trip or a very comfortable 2-day visit.

• Chatsworth House
  The "Palace of the Peak" — one of England's greatest country houses, seat of the Duke of Devonshire. Gardens, State Rooms, Farmyard, and 1,000 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown. The real-life inspiration for Pemberley in Pride and Prejudice.
• Bakewell
  The Peak District's most famous market town — home of the Bakewell pudding (not the tart!). Excellent stone market town with a fine medieval bridge over the River Wye.
• Dovedale
  The most beautiful limestone dale in England — a 2-mile riverside walk through dramatic stepping stones, cliffs, and caves. The stepping stones across the River Dove are one of England's most photographed landscapes.
• Mam Tor
  "The Shivering Mountain" — a 517m gritstone ridge with panoramic views across the Hope Valley and Dark Peak. A 45-minute circuit walk from the car park.
• Haddon Hall
  The best-preserved medieval manor house in England — used as a filming location for Jane Eyre and The Other Boleyn Girl. Adjacent to Bakewell.

Chatsworth House has a particular connection with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice — Chatsworth is widely considered the inspiration for Mr Darcy's Pemberley estate. American visitors with a Jane Austen interest frequently combine a Chatsworth visit with Lyme Park (Cheshire, an hour northwest) where the BBC filmed the famous lake scene from the 1995 adaptation.
